The Uglies

Let me ask you a question. “What kind of thoughts do you think?” Are your thoughts devaluing, diminishing, and depressing? In other words, do the thoughts you think make you feel worthless, small and miserable? If so you are suffering from what I call a bad case of the uglies. Let me explain a little bit more about the uglies. The uglies are those thoughts that not only make you feel worthless, small and discouraged but also cause you to be unattractive and a negative attractor.

A negative attractor is someone that attracts the negative. The negative attractor’s key word is “wrong”—the wrong man, wrong car, wrong job, wrong neighborhood, and wrong house. Name it and it is wrong.

Now that you know about the negative attractor, let’s move on to the uglies. In case you are not familiar with the uglies, they go something like this: “I’m not good enough, I’m not smart enough, I’m not witty enough, and I’m not popular enough, tall enough, thin enough. You name it, and you are not it. If you are what you think and the way you think affects how you feel, and how you feel affects what you do, what kind of results do you expect to get from the uglies?

Unfortunately, many of you will find yourselves being bombarded with the uglies throughout any given day. These thoughts are allowed to run unchecked through your mind without you ever stopping to question the source of who told you that. In my counseling sessions, whenever I ask the question, “Who told you that?” my clients will usually become confused simply because they never thought about the source of the statements. How about you—who told you that you were not good enough, smart enough, or witty enough? Don’t know? Let’s review for a minute.

If you lived in a perfect world, among perfect people, all your experiences would be positive, but that is not reality. The reality is that more times than not you have been the recipient of someone’s negative word spoken to you, by your or about you. You do not live in isolation of other people so you cannot control what people think or say. However, you can police what you will allow to have authority in your mind. In other words, you can control what you think (II Corinthians 10:5). You don’t have to drown in and be washed away by the uglies: devaluing, diminishing and depressing thoughts. Take control of your thinking! Start now to refuse to let your old tired thinking shape you into something you are not nor were you created to be. How? Revitalize your thinking through the “Whatsoever Principles”
